TSM and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) are the two globally leading standards for tailings management.
For over 20 years, the Mining Association of Canada led the way in responsible tailings management, a significant focus of the association’s work, including through its TSM program, specifically its Tailings Management Protocol.
The GISTM, released in 2020. At the point of launch of the Standard, International Council on Mining and Metals members committed to implementing the GISTM across all members’ tailings facilities within a 3-to-5-year period.
TSM adopting companies may use either TSM or GISTM to satisfy their tailings requirements.
The TSM Tailings Management Protocol has indicators focused on:
- Having a corporate tailings management policy and commitment
- Assigning accountability and responsibility for tailings management
- Developing and implementing site-specific tailings management systems and emergency preparedness measures
- Developing and implementing site-specific Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) Manual for Tailings and Water Management Facilities
- Conducting annual tailings management reviews.
